Rubie Lee

Brooklyn, NY

Growing up, Rubie Lee’s father worked as a DJ, and was constantly playing music, especially Haitian music from his home. “I loved how he could control a situation with songs he played, and knew so much about music,” she says. “I knew I wanted to do that.” After high school she began DJing, and has been making a name herself in the New York music scene. Her greatest gig yet? “Playing at the MoMA PS1 Warm Up over the summer—that was crazy.”

Personal Style

“It changes—sometimes I’m super girly, others it’s more tomboyish. But whatever I’m wearing, it’s always a look.”

The Greats

“Seeing Grace Jones perform last summer at Afropunk Festival was amazing. I never thought I would get to see her in my lifetime.”

Movie Night

“My favorite movie is definitely Dirty Dancing. Patrick Swayze, everything about that movie I just love.”

Tips & Tricks

“I have a shimmery eyeshadow that also works great as a highlighter on my cheeks.”

Now Playing

“I definitely switch up it up when I’m playing, from hip hop to house to reggae. I have a group of songs called ‘The Goodies’ that will always gets the crowd lit—a lot of Kanye and Beyoncé.”
