Nika de Carlo trained as a dancer for years, but after her uncle gave her a camera at 14, she fell in love with taking pictures, sending her down a different path. “I just bought a new medium format camera — the Mamiya Rangefinder,” she says. “It’s such a beautiful tool to work with, the colors are gorgeous.” Beyond creating a beautiful photo, Nika De Carlo strives to bring a narrative quality to her work, creating a story the viewer can connect to.“I’m really drawn to Nan Goldin’s work in The Ballad of Sexual Dependency. It is so real and raw.” In collaboration with hair stylist Masami Hosono, Nika published the zine Vacancy, capturing the freedom that comes with just being yourself.
