Mara Hoffman deserves her flowers. For the past 23 years under her namesake label, the seasoned ready-to-wear designer has created beautiful clothes, worn by big stars including Issa Rae, Sofia Vergara, and Priyanka Chopra. On Monday, November 6, she was honored with the 2023 Environmental Sustainability Award at the CFDA Awards. A trophy well deserved.
Of course, the New York-based designer needed a show-stopping look for the award show that still fit in with her naturally gorge aesthetic. For this, she tapped Milk Makeup Director of Artistry Sara Wren, who came up with a “beachy red carpet” look, turning to our very own Milk Makeup products to craft the sultry beat. We might be biased, but we’d say she nailed it.
“Mara’s look is all about great, dewy, poreless skin,” Sara says. “By layering and mixing textures, we created a look that will last all night but look effortless, like she just stepped off the beach and into a dress.”
Skin prep is especially important for a dewy, natural glow like Mara’s. That’s why Sara reached for Vegan Milk Moisturizer, which hydrates, softens skin, and seals in moisture with its mix of vegan milks like fig, oat, and argan. It’s also got hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, and aloe vera for that soothing, extra hydrated feel. Once the skin was prepped, Sara lightly filled in Mara's brows with KUSH Brow Shadow Stick in Dutch, then fluffed them up and out with KUSH Brow Lamination Gel, ensuring they don’t move all night. For her eye look, Sara chose a “soft, smoky brown” over a harsher black “to give her eyes some depth and sexiness without taking over the whole look,” she says. She applied Hydro Grip Eye Primer to prep Mara's eyelids, then went in with Color Chalk in Double Dutch (a brown), blending it out to make her blue-gray eyes really stand out. |
To add red-carpet ready drama that wouldn’t move all night, Sara lined Mara's lids with Infinity Long Wear Eyeliner in Limitless, a waterproof eyeliner pencil in brown. She finished the eyes with RISE Waterproof Mascara for major curl and length. Wren skipped foundation in favor of a medium-coverage, glowy base by mixing Future Fluid All Over Cream Concealer in 15NW with Bionic Glow in Reality, a luminous bronze shade. Because it was going to be a long night with a lot of cameras, Sara lightly set Mara's base with Pore Eclipse Matte Translucent Setting Powder in Medium. Of course, no face is complete in 2023 without some blush. Sara gave Mara a natural flush with Lip + Cheek in Enigma, a rosy beige hue. She added that same Lip + Cheek shade to Mara's lips, then went over it with Odyssey Lip Oil Gloss in Quest, a caramel beige, for a hydrated shine. “The lip is almost Mara’s natural lip color but with the volume turned up,” Sara said. To finish Mara's makeup and ensure it looked just as good on the red carpet as it did when she accepted her award, Sara finished with Pore Eclipse Matte Setting Spray. It sets makeup up to 16 hours, so she was good to celebrate her win all night long—without having to worry about her look budging. |
