Unlike some steps in your beauty routine (like perfecting winged liner on both eyes), learning how to use micellar water is a pretty simple process. It’s specifically designed to be convenient, easy-to-use, and suitable for all skin types. What was once an under-the-radar secret to makeup removal has now become fully mainstream.

Here at Milk Makeup, we’ve done a lot of research on the best micellar waters on the market and can’t wait to show you our own upgraded version of micellar technology: Hydro Ungrip Makeup Remover + Cleansing Water

Read on to learn exactly how it works—and how to use it to level up your makeup-removing routine.

What is micellar water?

Micellar water refers to a type of liquid makeup remover designed with micellar technology. Ions called micelles stick to dirt, oils, and makeup on your face, soaking them up so you can easily wipe them away without rinsing. They’re particularly effective for removing lighter makeup and water-based products (more on different ways to use our version later).

Micellar water is a popular makeup-removing choice because it’s a gentle and effective way to cleanse your face. As a bonus, you don’t need an extra rinse after you wipe the “water” away, making it great for quick cleanses. This type of makeup remover also tends to contain hydrating ingredients that leave all skin types feeling clean, soft, and hydrated.

What makes Hydro Ungrip Makeup Remover + Cleansing Water special?

Our cleansing water builds on traditional micellar formulas using one of our hero ingredients: blue agave extract. It’s what gives our award-winning Hydro Grip Primer its makeup-grabbing properties. Our Product Development team reverse-engineered this ingredient to make it ungrip everything on your face, then paired it with micellar technology to create a super magnet effect that gently lifts away dirt, makeup, and impurities.

To make our Hydro Ungrip Makeup Remover + Cleansing Water an even more soothing experience, we also added hemp-derived cannabis seed extract, hyaluronic acid, and aloe to help gently hydrate and soothe your skin for a dewy, healthy-looking glow.

“We layered in the agave as support backup for the micellar technology, so it's ungripping without stripping,” says Dianna Ruth, our Co-Founder and COO. “It gives you a clean feel without a drying sensation.”

How to Use Hydro Ungrip Makeup Remover + Cleansing Water

If you’ve never used a cleansing water before, think of it like any other makeup remover (just one that doesn’t leave any greasy, oily residue on your face). Pour some on a reusable makeup remover pad, gently press it against your makeup so it can absorb everything, then slide it off.

Make sure you’re not rubbing your skin, which can cause irritation, especially around the delicate eye area. By letting the formula sit for a second, you’ll allow it to effectively lift your makeup off without having to rub or pull at your skin. The push-down pump on our specially designed bottle makes it a breeze to get just the right amount of cleansing water each time you use it. (Later this year, we’ll be introducing an exciting add-on to our Hydro Ungrip Makeup Remover + Cleansing Water that makes this process more sustainable—so stay tuned.)

Our cleansing water’s upgraded ingredients also allow you to use it for a refreshing effect, even when you’re not wearing makeup. “You can sweep it all over your face, almost like a gentle toner,” says Dianna. Or, go targeted and use it to clean up makeup fallout or eyeliner mistakes.

“I love using it with a little pointed Q-tip to fix my eyeliner,” says Sara Wren, our Director of Artistry. “It’s not oily; it almost feels like water so it's really great for perfecting any mistakes, cleaning up your makeup without disturbing it, or making quick changes to your look.”

Sara also likes to use our cleansing water as a first-step remover before double cleansing with our Hydro Ungrip Cleansing Balm. “I'll gently wipe off my makeup and any dirt or oils with our cleansing water,” she says. “Our cleansing balm is for when I really need to deep-cleanse everything, usually after a heavy makeup look.” (We also wrote a full guide to our Hydro Ungrip Cleansing Balm to show you exactly how to incorporate it into your removal routine.) Whatever type of removal your makeup look calls for, our Hydro Ungrip duo has you fully covered.
