Welcome to the Intern Diaries. At Milk HQ, a lot happens behind the scenes and our interns are an integral part of everything we do. Here you'll get an inside look to see exactly what a day in the life looks like for them. Our interns learn about careers in product development, design, brand storytelling, and so much more—and they have plenty of cool stories and on-the-job advice to share. This week, get to know Ella, one of our Editorial Interns who is prepping to be the next New York Times Best-selling author.
Where did you go to school and what did you study?
I went to Barnard College and I studied English literature with a concentration in creative writing.
Why did you want to intern at Milk?
I've always loved using Milk products. I love the signature skincare sticks and the message Milk has to spread. It’s revolutionizing the beauty industry while also bringing in this cool, edgy tone. I thought I would be able to really learn how to write about beauty in a more forward-thinking way at the company.
What is a typical day at Milk like for you?
I'd say I get to the office at around 10:00. I make my coffee, then meet up with Jihan and Rob, who are my supervisors. I see if they need any tasks from me, then I go to Asana which is our work communication app and I look at my tasks. I work on projects. I love reaching out to people and seeing if they need anything from me because even if I don't have a task, I might be able to give someone a hand on something they need and they wouldn't think to ask me for.
What is something you want to accomplish in your career?
I would love to get a book published because before any other kind of writer, I'm a creative writer. That's something I've been trying to work on after graduating college because I'll have some more time to do so. Getting a book published would be amazing.
When did you start using makeup, and how has your relationship with makeup progressed over the years, especially after working with Milk?
I started using makeup when I was nine years old. I remember my mom bringing me this little Sephora kit that opened up (and it was super cute) for my birthday. I usually just wear makeup to cover my dark spots. Over the years I started getting a little more creative doing some eye shadow work. Since I started working at Milk and writing about makeup, I really found out the tips and tricks on how to do both glam and everyday makeup. I also think that working at Milk, since all the products have skincare ingredients on them, I'm much more worried and wary of wearing and infusing skin care with my makeup.
What is your favorite Milk Product?
It used to be Hydro Grip Primer (which I love), and I would say that, but I don't want to be basic. I love the Sculpt Sticks. They blend so easily. It's actually the best contour stick I've worn in my life.
Who inspires your approach to beauty and self-care?I would say Lady Gaga because before being authentically yourself was cool, she always encouraged that. She's so unapologetically herself and she encourages others to do the same. I think that in the 2010s she really revolutionized how we see beauty and how we look at ourselves. What is your favorite mocktail or cocktail?Espresso martinis because they do the job both ways. If you were an animal, what animal would you be?An eagle, because I could fly. If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?Trust your writing skills and work on them. When I was younger, I was trying to do different things. What if writing doesn't work? What if I can’t do this? That's just not the mindset you should have, especially if you want to be an artist. I know it's a very tricky industry, but just dive into that talent or passion of yours. |
