Our Best Dark Brown Lip Liner Is Actually an Eyeliner

Here’s why it works so well.

A dark brown lip liner never goes out of style. At least, not since the '90s, when it became the signature look for everyone from ‘round the way girls to supermodels. Fast forward to the 2020s, and the biggest celebs—like Cardi B and JT of the City Girls—are still making the look their own. When the style first became popular some 30+ years ago, it was achieved by melting the tip of a black or dark brown eyeliner pencil with a lighter before tracing the contours of your lips. These days, it's not as complicated but, as it turns out, our Infinity Long Wear Eyeliner in Limitless works similarly in that it can double as a lip liner, too: no lighter required.

Ari Adams, Milk’s Education Executive, shares how he uses Infinity to recreate the look.

How to use Infinity as a lip liner

You may be thinking, Can I even use an eyeliner on my lips? The answer is…yes and no. Not all liners are created equally, but Infinity Long Wear Eyeliner is safe to use on your lips. It’s designed to stay put up to 12 hours, and the creamy texture won’t settle into the lines around your mouth. “The formula is made with avocado oil, which helps it glide smoothly so it doesn't skip a beat...or any part of your lips,” says Adams.

To give your lips a rounded, full look, start at the corner of your upper lip and draw a line up toward the cupid’s bow, says Adams. “Do this on both sides, creating an X on the high points of the cupid's bow,” he suggests.

Then, move on to your lower lip, drawing your line from corner to corner in a small dashes. “This helps with stability to avoid the uneven line you can get when you go too quickly.” The deep brown shade is perfect for any skin tone and can be built up or blended out with your fingers, depending on the look you’re going for.

Once your lips are fully lined, you can contour by creating an ombré effect, filling in the outer borders and keeping the center of your lips bare. Then, top your lips off with a gloss—like our Odyssey Lip Oil Gloss—to add plenty of shine. If you’re going for a more subtle look, apply a neutral lipstick instead.

How to remove Infinity as a lip liner

If you make a mistake while applying your liner—don’t worry! Keep a lip brush and concealer on hand to erase any stray marks. “For full removal, I like to use the Hydro Ungrip Makeup Remover + Cleansing Water —it dissolves all your makeup and doesn't leave an oily residue after,” says Adams. Even the toughest waterproof makeup doesn’t stand a chance.
