Live Your Look: James

Celebrity makeup artist James Molloy on putting together the ultimate beauty kit.

At Milk Makeup, we believe it’s not just how you create your look; it’s what you do in it that matters. That’s what our motto Live Your Look is all about. It means forgetting the rules. Being seen and celebrated for living your truth. Having the freedom to show up as you every day, whether that’s with graphic liner or a glossed lip. And there's no better way for us to show what that looks like than passing the mic to our Milk Fam.

In this series, we're opening it up to our community to share their inspirations, self-expression, beauty routines, and so much more. Get to know the faces behind our campaigns who are as inspiring off camera as they are on. This week, we're getting to know James, a creative fave of ours. Find out a little bit more about the co-founder of MyKitCo, celebrity makeup artist, and eyeliner expert.

As the Co-founder of MyKitCo and an industry icon who’s been in the beauty game for almost 20 years, celebrity makeup artist James Molloy knows a thing or two about putting together the ultimate beauty kit. That’s why we teamed up with him to create custom makeup artist kits for the launch of our Hydro Grip 12-Hour Gel Tint. James helped us dream up a Milk Makeup version of his My Big Bottle Bag for a pro-approved kit of our 15 flexible shades—all packed up in a photoshoot-ready case.

While that set remains an exclusive creation for the makeup artists in our Milk Community, you can definitely shop James’s other essentials, like our new hydrating skin tint and best-selling hydrating primer (more on that below). We sat down with James to talk about his work at MyKitCo (which celebrates its 10th birthday this year), his favorite Milk Makeup products, and his biggest beauty inspirations. Plus, a few fun facts that’ll help you get to know him better.

What was the inspiration behind founding MyKitCo?

MyKitCo was born out of necessity in November 2015. As a makeup artist of almost 20 years, I still found myself custom-making my personal kit from multiple stores and brands, featuring various quality and budget brushes, bags, and tools. Along with my partner, Alex, we launched the first pro-focused, one-stop kit shop for all your makeup kit needs. We’re designed by a makeup artist for makeup lovers.

The desire to condense makeup kits to save space and weight is at an all-time high. One of our most popular bags in this field is our My Bottle Bag, where artists can decant liquids, creams, and powders into our customizable bottles.

If you could only use one Milk Makeup product for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

I use Hydro Grip Primer when I’m working with my celebrity clients because of the texture; it’s lightweight and feels beautiful on the skin. It’s a savior when it comes to long wear. I know when I use it, I can apply less powder, which means a fresher-looking base. And it’s invisible under heavy flash. It’s a win-win.

How would you describe your personal approach to beauty?

I take most of my inspiration from my time at the collections and how skin was always the main focus. I also draw inspiration from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. Makeup that evokes a feeling—a bold moment paired with something minimal. I like balance in my beauty looks.

What’s your go-to makeup look?

It has to be eyeliner in any form. I love how it can evoke a feeling or a moment in time. Smudge it, and it’s instantly grunge or post-club. Keep it sharp, and it becomes retro or classic.

How would you describe your personal style?

I just like to feel comfortable. I’m most inspired style-wise when I’m in Japan. The guys, in particular, have incredible style in Tokyo.

What’s your zodiac sign? Do you see those traits in yourself?

I’m an Aquarius. I don’t read too much into it, but I know creativity is up there in our traits, and I’d say that fits.

What’s your favorite hobby?

I’m a huge fan of the Popovy sisters and their intricate BJD figures. I’ve started to paint them; it really tests my steady hand.

If you had a one-way ticket to anywhere, where would you go?

Joshua Tree. It’s our magical hideaway, a place to fully recharge. I love hot days and clear skies at night for stargazing.

What would your superpower be if you could choose one?

Flight. Imagine the time you’d save not sitting in traffic!

What album or song are you currently listening to on repeat?

The Wicked movie soundtrack. It’s safe to say I’m fully converted, as I was never a fan of the stage show, but the movie was a musical, visual feast.

What does your ideal day look like?

It would start with a Peloton ride, then brunch, and some time in my studio, which is my happy place.
