Hydro Ungrip to the rescue.

When you’re using waterproof mascara, things like smudging and smearing suddenly become a non-factor. But figuring out how to remove waterproof mascara without damaging your lashes or irritating the sensitive skin around your eyes can sometimes prove to be a challenge—if you’re not equipped with the right tips.

That said, trust us: learning how to do it without wreaking havoc on your face isn’t as hard as it sounds. So while you’ll enjoy the sky-high benefits of Milk’s new RISE Waterproof Mascara all day long, you can be totally makeup-free when it’s time to take it off. All you have to do is follow a few simple steps.

Ahead, everything you need to know about our new RISE Waterproof formula, and of course, how to safely remove your makeup using a few of our all-star products: Hydro Ungrip Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm and Hydro Ungrip Makeup Remover + Cleansing Water.

What is waterproof mascara?

Waterproof mascaras use similar ingredients found in traditional formulas. The main difference is they also include emollients like isododecane—found in our RISE formula—to make the product resistant to water, sweat, and tears. “It’s great for vacation, weddings, or working out,” says Milk Makeup Director of Artistry Sara Wren.

Are some waterproof mascaras better for lashes than others?

Our RISE formula stands out against the rest because of its conditioning ingredients, like monoi oil and marigold extract, which help to strengthen lashes. Plus, our Vegan Lash Lift Technology uses four different waxes to lift and define each individual lash—and make sure they stay in place. “Wearing a conditioning waterproof mascara like RISE Waterproof allows you to get the benefits of a long-wearing mascara but without ruining the health of your lashes,” Sara adds.

Waterproof Mascaras vs. Traditional Mascaras: Which are harder to remove?

Simply put, chances are you’re going to have a harder time removing a waterproof mascara in comparison to a traditional formula. Because waterproof mascaras contain special emollients to resist moisture, water alone won’t work to loosen up the formula. “Balms and oil-based cleansers are the best option for removing waterproof formulas,” says Wren. “I like using Hydro Ungrip Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm.”

How to Remove Waterproof Mascara

The process for removing waterproof mascara will vary based on the type of product you reach for—but whether you’re using a balm or a cleansing water, they’ll both get the job done. It really just comes down to how much makeup you’re wearing, and of course, personal preference.

How to remove waterproof mascara using a cleansing balm

Sara’s fave Hydro Ungrip Cleansing Balm uses blue agave extract to grip onto our waterproof formula, gently break it down, then melt it away. This product is great to use across all skin types, but those with dry or sensitive eyes will especially appreciate the ultra-moisturizing ingredients when removing heavy makeup. Step 1: When using a balm, start off with dry hands and most importantly, a dry face. Step 2: Apply a nickel-size amount to your hands, close your eyes, then start gently massaging the eye area. Step 3: Add some water to help create a milky lather. Step 4: “Remove with a warm, damp washcloth or reusable cotton pad,” Sara suggests. And voilà! Your back to au naturel.

How to remove waterproof mascara using a cleansing water

Milk’s Hydro Ungrip Cleansing Water combines the power of micellar water and blue agave extract, along with hemp-derived cannabis seed extract, hyaluronic acid, and aloe, to gently lift away and remove waterproof mascara, while hydrating and soothing skin.

This one is perfect for all skin types—use it alone to remove light remnants of mascara, or as the first step in a double cleansing routine for a heavier beat.

Step 1: Using the push-down pump, soak a pad like a Hydro Ungrip Resuable Pad in the gentle formula.

Step 2: With closed eyes, start to softly massage the lashes, then slowly wipe mascara away.

Step 3: Repeat until all traces of mascara have been removed—that’s it. Follow up with a second cleanser if you wanna.

Remember: Waterproof mascara is supposed to stay on until you need it off. With these tips in mind, it’ll be easier than ever to remove when it’s time.
