At Milk Makeup, we believe it’s not just how you create your look; it’s what you do in it that matters. That’s what our motto Live Your Look is all about. It means forgetting the rules. Having the freedom to show up as you every day, whether that’s with graphic liner or a glossed lip. Being seen and celebrated for living your truth. And there's no better way for us to show what that looks like than passing the mic to our Milk Fam.
In this series, we're opening it up to our community to share their inspirations, self-expression, beauty routines, and so much more. Get to know the faces behind our campaigns who are as inspiring off camera as they are on. This week, we're getting to know Roseline, who starred in our KUSH Brow Shadow Stick and Lip + Cheek campaigns. Find out a little bit more about the model, plus advocate, and co-host of the coolest party in New York.
It’s impossible to define Roseline in three words. That becomes instantly clear when, stumped, she calls her best friend on-set of our summer beauty shoot to ask. Inviting, beautiful, and charming make the top three spots, but there’s also alluring, friendly, sweet, kind, personable, funny, and “just an amazing ass friend.”
“We’re just super tight,” says Roseline, once she’s off the phone. “We’re throwing parties together.” The parties in question are called OPENHOUSE, a safe space for expression, endless dancing, and a mix of genres from Afrobeats and R&B. When she’s not co-hosting nights for community and joy, she models—a profession she’s rightfully critical in an industry that can’t decide whether plus inclusion should be a passing trend or a true commitment.
“It’ll be like two steps forwards and a million back,” she says, referencing fashion’s tendency to highlight plus models one season, then only cast conventionally thin bodies the next. “It’s been hard to see that happening.” For her, the only way to move through the industry is authentically forward. “I’m just gonna go for it,” she says.
Below, get to know Roseline’s thoughts on personal style, superpowers, and the ingredients for a perfect party.
How would you describe your personal style?
Comfort is the most important. I shop on ASOS, and then I’ll get stuff from Berriez, like the cool vintage stuff in plus size, which I love that she caters to. And then just random thrift stores, especially in San Francisco. San Francisco has the best thrift shops. If you go to Japantown, it’s so cool. One of the coolest motorcycle jackets I got from there. They had it for like $20. I swear to God, if this was New York it’d be $300. I got a leather dad hat that’s like a Cowboy’s hat. I’m from Dallas, so that’s awesome.
What’s your daily relationship with beauty?
Ignore labels. They’ll be like, “Oh, this is a lip liner.” I’m using it for everything. I just feel like it’s all about how you set and put it together, and make sure oil and water aren’t mixing, but everyone knows that. Lipstick can be a blush. You starred in our shoot for KUSH Brow Shadow Stick! What do you think of the formula, and what’s your normal brow routine?I really love this brow stick. I love the texture, that it’s like a pomade. The fact that it’s easily buildable is really nice. It’s easy—I was like, whoa! It’s like five-second brows. So light, so good. My normal brow routine fluctuates because I have really thin, fine brows. Sometimes I’ll do a literal line, sometimes I’ll fill them in. Sometimes I want them fuller. So my brows kind of come and go. Do you feel like the beauty space has gotten better than the fashion space in terms of plus inclusion?Totally. 100%. But I want to see people in clothes that look good, tasteful, but still sexy and fun. I felt like I was progressing, and then it kind of just slowed down especially with Fashion Week. Last year, I went to a lot of castings. This year, none. I’m just like, what’s going on? How do you #LiveYourLook?By doing me. I’m just confident, I don’t care, I’m just gonna go for it. |
What music are you currently listening to?
Honestly, I’ve been listening to Renaissance. We were all on a phone call because we’re gonna go watch [Beyoncé] in Paris. We’re like, let’s just buy tickets there. We’ll get a cute Airbnb and we have friends that live there, so let’s just make it happen!
Okay, music. Did you know that Naomi Campbell came out with an album in the ‘90s? I listened to that. It’s called Baby Woman. Recently, I guess Naira Marley—Afrobeats. Ice Spice, Aya Nakamura, she’s like African R&B but French. Really cool. And I love Rosalía. She’s problematic, but she’s my problematic queen. What would your dream day look like?I would wake up at 5:00 A.M., go to the gym, have breakfast, and do all the things by 8:00 A.M. Have a good morning that’s not rushed or frantic. Wash my dishes, make my bed, and put all the things where they belong. This is a dream because this is what I want to do, but my ADHD is like no, we’re not moving. I would do something fun with my friends, and then I’d take a midday nap. I love taking naps. I’ve been trying to be more social at night and do stuff. I’m always the last one to get there and the first one to leave. I would love to go out somewhere to eat, go shopping. And in my dream world, I could fit clothes everywhere, and I’d have unlimited money, so I would just spend my day shopping. That's the dream.Literally, and not look at shoes and accessories. I want to look at clothes. And I want to do all the things—go skydiving—all the things that I’m scared of because I’m fat. I want to do that stuff. My dream day would be a normal day. |
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
I would love the superpower to teleport anywhere in the world at any given time. It’d be so nice to go to Jamaica for the day and then be back for dinner in my apartment. That’d be ideal. If I’m trying to eat, I’m going to Paris because the food is so good. The Japanese food, Lebanese food, Senegalese food, French food. Delicious. And the pastries. My favorite thing about Paris is it’s flat so you could walk around all day without feeling so exhausted. I was there last year for my birthday. Best experience ever. Are you working on any projects you want to share with our Milk Fam?I throw parties for African people in New York. Young, fun, cool people. It’s called OPENHOUSE. We’re gonna be trying to do more events, but right now we have a monthly Saturday party at Hart Bar, Bushwick. Moving forward, we’re trying to do other fun events where we introduce Afrobeats, Afrohouse, and different genres that are from the continent. How did you first start OPENHOUSE?My friend and I were in London. The parties were so cool because we got to see different parts of our culture, be it our Black American culture or our African culture. One of our friends is a DJ, so this summer we’re hanging out on a rooftop. We were partying on his roof and could not stop dancing. We were like, we have to start throwing parties because this is too good. We have a whole team. It’s something that is just ours. It’s cool getting to do that with my friends, creating a safe space for people to just come party and express themselves in the funnest way. |
