How to Remove Your Halloween Makeup Without Wrecking Your Skin

Milk Makeup is celebrating Spooky Season and our best-selling range of Hydro Grip/Hydro Ungrip products with Hydroween. For the occasion, we’re bringing Halloween Makeup inspiration, created with your favorite Milk products—courtesy of some talented members of our Milk Fam.

We have New York City-based SFX and Makeup Artist Dime (@beatbydime), an expert in full glam and gore, to show us how they take their Halloween look off in three steps.

You’ve gorged yourself on candy. You drank the cider. You danced all night. There’s only one thing left to do once you reach home after a Halloween party: Take all that makeup off. We know, you’re ready to knock out, but do you really want your pillowcases covered in face paint? Hell no. “Just because makeup is labeled as long wear, it doesn’t mean that you should wear it for long periods of time,” says New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, M.D.

Halloween makeup is designed for serious coverage, which can take a toll on your skin. “The makeup typically contains ingredients that help it stay in place for long periods of time, but this can often cause skin irritation or lead to acne breakouts,” says Dr. Zeichner.

Good news—removing your Halloween makeup look shouldn’t take long, even if you’re tired. Not if you’re using our Hydro Ungrip Makeup Remover + Cleansing Water and Hydro Ungrip Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm. Both work to gently cleanse your skin so you can easily melt off that heavy-duty Halloween makeup, whether it’s fake blood or full face paint. They’re packed with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and aloe vera, so your skin isn’t left feeling dry and tight afterward.

Allow Dime, a special effects makeup creator based in New York City, to show you how easy it is to take off their cyborg costume makeup with our Hydro Ungrip products.

1. Cleansing Balm

An oil-based cleanser like our Hydro Ungrip Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm is ideal to loosen up heavy and/or waterproof makeup, including eyeliner, embellishments, body paint, you name it. First, remove your eyelashes, rhinestones, or appliqués that may be on your face.

Take a few dry fingers to scoop out the balm and apply a few dollops to your face. Rub it in using circular motions. “It literally melts all the product already on my face—I’m obsessed,” says Dime. You can thank those infused sunflower and soybean oils for keeping your skin smooth and soft afterwards.

Next, swipe away the residue with a damp cotton pad or cloth—no scrubbing needed. We recommend our Hydro Ungrip Reusable Pads, which are made with cotton and soft bamboo fibers that are super gentle, even if you have sensitive skin.

2. Micellar Water

Now for round 2 of your double cleanse: micellar technology is great for lifting up lighter makeup, like those last bits of pigment in those harder-to-reach areas (looking at you, lower and upper lash lines).

Soak up some of our Hydro Ungrip Makeup Remover + Cleanser onto another reusable pad, then gently go over your face, eyes, lips, and neck again to get any leftover residue. Repeat as needed. “It was literally so easy and so quick to get this done,” says Dime. “You can’t even tell I had makeup on.”

The blue agave extract in our Hydro Ungrip formula works with the micella to lift dirt and other impurities away at the same time. Added bonus: It’s fragrance-free so you can avoid any extra irritation.

3. Cleanse Again

Our Hydro Ungrip products work like a dream for taking off makeup, but it’s still important to keep up with the rest of your skincare routine.

Wash your face one last time with warm water and a gentle hydrating cleanser, like our Vegan Milk Cleanser, or your favorite face wash to pamper your skin a little bit—it’s been through a lot.

Treat your skin to your usual exfoliators, toners, serums, and creams to finish off the night. Then, lock it all in with our Vegan Milk Moisturizer—especially if you have dry skin. “Make sure to moisturize your skin after washing to help maintain the integrity of the skin barrier,” says Dr. Zeichner.

That’s it! Now you can curl up in bed and think of Halloween costume ideas for next year—start the countdown.
